Tradescantia: 

Common name: Spiderwort

A plant with everything in threes - 3 petals per flower and the fine, grass-like eaves are arranged in threes around the stem. Generally trouble free and long flowering perennials. They good in sun or part shade and will grow happily in quite moist soils as well as normal garden soil. 

It is best to dead head to encourage repeat flowering and to prevent possibly inferior seedlings.

Propagate named varieties by division or by stem cuttings which root quickly.

A close relative of Commelina 

 

Tradescantia x.andersoniana Blue and Gold: Royal blue (almost violet) flowers and golden leaves make a stunning impact in a sunny or semi sunny border.  

 

Tradescantia x.andersoniana Concord Grape: Rich purple flowers from June into autumn.  A good strong grower that does well at the front of a semi-shaded border. About 2ft tall.
