Cosmos
Cosmos are well known garden annuals but
there are a few perennials to be had as well. They can be treated much
like a Dahlia, and exhibit the same
degree of hardiness.

Cosmos atrosanguineus
"Chocolate Cosmos" - so called
not just for the dark chocolaty red of the petals but also for the hint of
chocolate scent in the mature flowers. The flowers are held on wiry
stems. Plant deeply if you plan to leave the tubers in the ground
but don't expect flowers before the end of July. Alternatively dig up the
tubers in early winter, pot up and store frost free until late winter when
you should commence watering. Plant out in late May or whenever the
prospect of frost has passed for your garden. Keep well dead headed; it is
tidier to cut off the stems a their base rather than just nipping off the
dead flower. These plants are sterile so they won't seed.
