Calamagrostis brachytricha with Eupatorium mac. Atropurpureum and Echinacea White Swan at Trentham Gardens Stoke-On-Trent 2nd September 2008Calamagrostis:

Beautiful late summer and autumn flowering grasses they are especially good planted en masse.

These are cool season grasses to be divided in early spring or autumn.

Common name: Reed Grass. A member of Poaceae family

Perfect Partners: Calamagrostis brachytricha with Eupatorium maculatum Atropurpureum. and Echinacea White Swan at Trentham Gardens Stoke-On-Trent 2nd September 2008

Calamagrostis brachytricha

Fine late flowering (end of August onwards) grass with large impressive plume-shaped heads with a pinkish tinge. About 3ft tall and enjoying a sunny spot. The heads remain attractive into the winter.

The name Brachytricha means "short hairs". The common name for this grass is "Diamond Feather Grass" or "Korean Feather Reed Grass".  The plants are native to Central and Eastern Asia.

21st September 2011: Calamagrostis brachytricha in our garden looking particularly effective with the autumn sunlight streaming through its lovely flower heads. I find that this grass is best planted in groups, single plants just don't have the impact. However they are easily divided in spring if you want to build up a drift of them.

Calamagrostis Overdam

On this variety the leaves are striped with cream and the new leaves in spring are tinged pink. About 5ft tall in ideal conditions.
