Berkheya:

South African plants normally with spiny stems and leaves and daisy flowers in mid summer followed by attractive seed heads.  Hardy with us over many years. Best in a sunny spot. They do spread once established. Propagate by division or seed.

A member of the Asteraceae family.

Berkheya purpurea

Large pale purple flowers on 2ft stems. You might find this plant under a number of made-up variety names: "Zulu Warrior", "Silver Spike" - all seem to be the same to us.  If you save seed you might find the flower colour of resulting plants varies from very pale to slightly deeper purple. We propagate by division from a well-coloured plant.

Perfect Partners: Berkheya purpurea in our garden with (l-r) Achillea Christine's Pink, Lychnis coronaria Alba, Liatris Floristan Violet. © 2010 SpecialPerennials.com All rights reserved.
