Aquilegia
Common names:
Columbine, Granny's Bonnet
Lovely old-fashioned
cottage garden plants that flower early in the perennial season and like
part sun or part shade and a good humus-rich soil if possible.
They can be grown from
seed but resulting flowers from the garden plants are completely
unpredictable. For this reason it is best to remove spend flowers to
prevent self-seeding unless you don't mind a surprise. Otherwise plants
can be carefully divided or buy a commercial seed strain from a reliable
seedsman.
The only problems you
are likely to encounter are a saw fly caterpillar that can eat the leaves
in May (spray or pick off the blighters) or occasional mildew in potted
plants that have been allowed to dry out too much.
Like other members of
the Ranunculaceae (Buttercup) family, Aquilegias are
harmful if eaten. |
