Alcea rosea (Hollyhock) at Wollerton Old HallAlcea:

Common name: Hollyhock.

Well-loved cottage plants with mounds of large, rough leaves and tall spires studded with silken, open-cupped flowers throughout the summer and autumn. Plant at the back of a border or against a wall for dramatic verticals.  Loved by bees: watch them cover themselves in pollen as they roll around the cup.

Deep rooted and long lived. Some strains are badly affected by a rust disease that disfigures the leaves and weakens the plants. We have chosen some tried and tested types that not badly affected by rust in our experience.

A member of the Malvaceae (Mallow) family.

Alcea rosea Nigra - Black Hollyhock flowerAlcea rosea Nigra

Common Name: Black Hollyhock. Stunning, deep black-red, silken flowers on 6ft stems.

Alcea rugosa

A species hollyhock that in our experience doesn't suffer from rust. Pale lemon flowers with slightly darker centres. Usually about 6 - 8ft tall, but one plant, self sown right at the edge of patio, reached over 12ft this year!  Occasionally produces semi double flowers.

The epithet rugosa means "wrinkled" referring the leaves. The common name is Russian Hollyhock.
