Alcea:
Common name: Hollyhock.
Well-loved cottage
plants with mounds of large, rough leaves and tall spires studded with
silken, open-cupped flowers throughout the summer and autumn. Plant at the
back of a border or against a wall for dramatic verticals. Loved by
bees: watch them cover themselves in pollen as they roll around the cup.
Deep rooted and
long lived. Some strains are badly affected by a rust disease that
disfigures the leaves and weakens the plants. We have chosen some tried
and tested types that not badly affected by rust in our experience.
A member of the Malvaceae
(Mallow) family.
