Schizostylis:
Common Name: Kaffir Lily, although it is not a
lily, being more closely related to the crocus.
Growing from corms the sword shaped leaves
grow to about 20-30cm tall. The gladioli-like stems arise in autumn and
bear crocus-shaped blooms from September right through to December. The
plants can be grown in pots and brought indoors in winter to continue
blooming.
They are hungry feeders and soon wear out
their soil - dig up every other year in spring and replant in soil
enriched with compost and a slow release balanced fertilizer. Read more
about care and cultivation in our Garden Diary entry for September
2009.
