| Potentilla:
Common Name: Cinquefoil
The common name comes from from 5-petaled flowers, the plants also have
5-fingered or lobbed leaves that are often silver-haired and attractive in
their own right.
The plants are generally low growing but the flowers may be bourn on
long trailing stems that will scramble up neighbouring plants. They flower
for a long period in flushes between May and September (and often beyond
in mild weather) if regularly deadheaded.
They prefer a fairly sunny spot and soil that does not dry out
completely. They will self seed and some types will come true. Others must
be propagated by division. The only pests likely are aphids, which have
little effect on the plants.
