Heuchera:
(Common Name:
Coral Flower).
The common name refers to
the flower colour of the original garden varieties. Nowadays the flowers
come in many shades of white, green, cream, pink, coral and deep red.
However these plants are mostly valued for their attractive and colourful
leaves, which give interest throughout the year.
They are happy in shade, preferring
reasonable soil but tolerating dry shade well. When grown in full sun some
of the more colourful leaves can scorch - we have tried to select
resistant varieties.
The only serious pest is
vine weevil, which find the roots irresistible. If this pest is a problem
in your garden check plants regularly by doing the "tug test" - gently
pull holding a leaf. If the plant comes out of the ground, dig it up
and kill any
grubs in the soil and replant. Heucheras do tend to pull themselves up out
of the soil so regular replanting is beneficial.
Propagate by division.
Heights quoted below are for
the leaf mound - flower spikes grow taller.
