Gaillardias in the mixed borderGaillardia:

(Common Name: Mexican Blanket Flower) .

Despite the common name they hail from North America including parts of Canada - the name derives from the similarity of the banded colours of some varieties to the patterns on Mexican blankets.

Brightly coloured daisy flowers in bloom throughout the summer and autumn. We prefer the taller varieties rather than the dwarf types commonly seen in bedding. All are soundly perennial and hardy in well drained soils. Hardiness can be improved in less favourable sites by cutting the stems down below the lowest flower buds in mid autumn.  Easy to grow from divisions and root cuttings.  Dead head regularly.

Perfect Partners: "Burgunder" rests against Achillea Forncett Fletton with the deep maroon foliage of Physocarpus Diablo as a backdrop.

We would be interested to buy / exchange plants of the old English varieties like Ipswich Beauty and Wirral Flame.

Read more about Gaillardia in our garden diary for October 2011.

Gaillardia aristata "Maxima Aurea": Tall shining gold with extra large flowers reaching about 2ft 9in tall

Gaillardia Bijou

Very dwarf variety; not more than 1ft tall but with the same flower power as its larger brethren.

Available from late May 2012.

Gaillardia Fackelschein

("Torchlight"): Banded red-yellow bi-colour reaching about 2ft 6in tall with strong, self-supporting stems. Flowers for an incredibly long time (if dead headed); starting in early June and still going just as strongly at the end of October. One of the most admired plants in our garden this year.

Gaillardia grandiflora Amber Wheels: Large amber yellow flowers with golden centres on stiff stems about 2ft tall.

Gaillardia grandiflora Bremen: Red flowers with large yellow margins on stiff stems about 2ft tall. Shorter and less stiff in stem than Fackelschein.

Gaillardia grandiflora Burgunder

("Burgundy") As the name suggests a beautiful deep rich burgundy red reaching about 2ft tall

Gaillardia grandiflora Tokajer

Orange flowers with yellow edges and just a hint of warm magenta in the centre. 2ft 6in tall. Rather lovely.
