Francoa:
(Common Name:
Bridal Wreath, Wedding Plant).
Large relatives of the
alpine Saxifrage with lyre-shaped, fleshy leaves and spires of star-shaped
flowers in summer. Dead head first blooms to get a second flush. They grow
in sun or part shade - getting glossier leaves in shade. Leave seed heads
on in autumn for winter interest. They produce masses of seed that is best
saved an sown in trays - we have found that only a few self seeds come up
when left to their own devices. Cut back leaves in March / April to
encourage fresh growth. There
are several species that are very similar - F.sonchifolia and F.appendiculata
appear nearly identical to us. We are also trialing F.sonchifolia Molly
Anderson. Again this is very similar to the species. We have also tried
"Confetti", which is white, but it hasn't been at all hardy with
us.
