Commelina
tuberosa
Called "Sleeping Beauty" or
"Day Flower" because the flowers
hide away at night, unfurling again in the morning. Incredibly blue
flowers borne in groups at the top of stout, lush green stems. Hardy with
us and perfectly at home in our garden but bear in mind that new stems do
not emerge until late spring. Reaches about 75cm (2ft
6in) tall in its second year. Young stems are fragile and easily break off, however
Sue Weston of the NGS tells us that these stems are easy to root in water.
2010/11 Winter update: the tubers and
even some young seedlings have
come through a very harsh winter again in the ground for us without any
losses!
Commelina are members of the
Commelinaceae family and closely related to Tradescantia.
