This has lovely brassy flowers - living up to their
name which means "Cymbal Star" referring to circular wheels
carrying bells which were operated by medieval pipe organs making a
continual tinkling sound when played - the cone resembling the wheel and
the petals the brass bells. If your soil is good, rich and moist in summer
expect a plant around 4ft tall (possibly 4ft 6in) otherwise the plants
will reach around 3ft tall. The plant originally bearing this name
was introduced by Karl Foerster in 1956. However it is described as having
the largest flowers of any Helenium, something that could not describe any
of the various plants circulating under this name. The consensus opinion
was that the original plant had disappeared from cultivation but recently
a plant has emerged from
Germany
that promises to be the true variety – watch this space.
