The Garden in August

August is peak season in our garden with perennials blooming, burgeoning and unfortunately this year blowing around in the gale force winds.

Firstly a little garden poser for you. What is this?
Click the picture to find out.

A lovely old Hemerocallis cultivar, "Gay Bombardier" is still blooming strongly and tones perfectly with Helenium Mahagoni a Karl Foerster variety from the mid 20th century.

Echinacea purpurea Rubinstern (Ruby Star) is set off boldly by Leucanthemum x.superbum "Wirral Pride"
Hot pinks are shining out. A good mixture for moist soils is Lythrum "Dropmore Purple" (Pureple Loosestrife") and Persicaria amplexicaulis "Atropurpurea" (common name, Fire Tails)

On the right, Gaillardias have similar flowers to Heleniums but are more lax, softer plants with larger petals. In the foreground "Oranges and Lemons" gives a warm glow with Echinops ritro, Helenium "Kupfersprudel" ("Copper Fountain"), Kniphofia "Chi Chi" and in the background the steely blue of Eryngium x.tripartitum

Helenium Time!

We hope lots of you will be able to make it to our Helenium Collection open weekend on 30/31 August 2008 (10am - 4pm). Here is a little taster:

Helenium Kokarde Helenium Luc
