The Garden in October

October is normally a month of two halves - sunny and fairly mild to start, cold and crisp later with the first air frost usually occurring sometimes in the month.  We find it is worth while protecting tender plants that are still in full flower to for these few nights as the weather nearly always picks up again into November.

Aster novi-belgii "Red Robin" is peaking in early October and Erigeron "Schneewittchen" ("Snow White") is blooming for the second or third time. Phlox paniculata "Uspeh" is an old Russian variety that blooms in August and again in October.
Leucanthemum x.superbum cultivars are reblooming well at the moment along the New World Salvias. The pure white of "Wirral Supreme" sits well with the hardy Salvia "Dark Dancer". Linaria triornithophora Rosea (also sold under the trade name of "Pink Budgies") flowers for a long time throughout the summer if deadheaded. It can usually be relied on to make a good show in October.

The last butterflies of Autumn are eagerly seeking nectar. The Verbena bonariensis are still a firm favourite with the Commas.

Miscanthus Kleiner Silber Spinne © 2007 SpecialPerennials.comGrasses catch the late Autumn light, especially the silk heads of Miscanthus sinensis "Kleiner Silber Spinne" ("Little Silver Spider"). Miscanthus should only be divided in the early summer.
