The Garden in July

July 2008 started cold and wet with strong winds and very little sun. By the end of July the weather turned hot and humid.

Late June and July is time when our Hemerocallis Collection is coming into full bloom. We have many new plants blooming for the first time for us - its just like Christmas every morning waiting to see a new delight. Some highlights from our trial beds are shown on the here. In mid July we counted over 190 different varieties in bloom on a single day.

Deadheading Day Lilies is a matter of some debate. Some enthusiasts like to deadhead all open blooms in the late evening. Some people deadhead in the morning when its clear which flowers are fading. Some research suggests that leaving the deadheads on until they shrivel allows the plant to reabsorb trace nutrients. Leaving the deadheads on can however lead to moulds forming. (Latest advice is to dead head and dispose of them in the bin to avoid gall midge problems next year, Jan 09)

Erigerons
have stunning throughout June and July.  In early August they will be cut back hard to encourage a late flush of bloom in October.

Lythrum like Dropmore Purple on the right of this picture are great bee plants.
July is when Centaurea will probably need cutting back after their first period of flowering fades. gardening friends often ask how to prune them back.

On the right you can see a part pruned plant. I am cutting out the long mid-green or brown stems right at their bases, leaving the new leaves just poking through the soil. This was done on 2nd July and the plant was back in flower by 25th July.
