Late June and July is time when our
Hemerocallis Collection is coming into full bloom. We have many new plants
blooming for the first time for us - its just like Christmas every morning
waiting to see a new delight. Some highlights from our trial beds are
shown on the here. In mid July we counted over 190 different varieties in
bloom on a single day.
Deadheading Day Lilies is a matter of
some debate. Some enthusiasts like to deadhead all open blooms in the late
evening. Some people deadhead in the morning when its clear which flowers
are fading. Some research suggests that leaving the deadheads on until
they shrivel allows the plant to reabsorb trace nutrients. Leaving the
deadheads on can however lead to moulds forming. (Latest advice is
to dead head and dispose of them in the bin to avoid gall midge problems
