Helenium Hartmut Reiger © 2007 SpecialPerennials.comThe Garden in August

August is the time to sit back, relax and enjoy the rewards of your labours in the garden. For us it is peak flowering season for Heleniums with those that started in June (e.g. "Luc", "Wyndley", "The Bishop" and "Kupfersprudel" now being deadheaded and sending forth their second flush of bloom. The July flowerers are at their peak and the each day brings a new August flowerer into bloom.

As August draws to a close a profusion of flowers crowd the beds and borders. On the right Helenium Baronin Linden pushes up above Achillea Red Velvet.

South African
perennials like Berkheya purpurea (left) are starting to bloom. The soft pale purple blends well with Achillea "Christine's Pink" and Cirsium diacanthum (syn. Ptilostemon diacantha)

Other perennials are also peaking. The deep blue heads of Echinops ritro and Eryngium x.tripartitum contrast well with the intense orange of the Tiger Lilies (Lilium tigrum)

Helenium
Zimbelstern is a lovely August flowering cultivar with petals that don't droop and orange-washed, brassy yellow flowers.
Leucanthemum x.superbum Marian Bilsand © 2007 SpecialPerennials.comAlso at their peak are the Leucanthemum x.superbum cultivars with their (generally) pure white flowers with yellow centres. On the left is "Marian Bilsland" a beautiful cultivar that we have just acquired for our garden.
