Centaurea
rupestris
Bright yellow cornflowers open from spiny
green buds. The stiff stems radiate to a spread of about 1ft and grow to about
1ft tall. Best at the front of the border or in the
rock garden. Flowers from June through to early August. Very drought tolerant
and best in free-draining soil and a sunny spot.
The epithet rupestris means
"found in rocky places".
Beware: the buds are studded with
near-invisible but very sharp spines.
