Centaurea
phrygia
Unusual. Mauve cornflowers open from hairy
brown buds. The flowers are very attractive to bees. The stiff stems reach
about 2ft 6in and grow well in the border, cottage garden or meadow planting.
Flowers from June through to early August. Drought tolerant but not fussy about
soil type. Best in sun.
The origin of the common name, Wig
Knapweed, is obvious when you see the buds.
