 Centaurea
nigra
Native British wildflower known variously as Hardheads, Loggerheads, Black Knapweed and Spanish Buttons. With purplish pink flowers on stiff, upright stems about 3ft tall. Best in sun. After each flush of flowers allow the Goldfinches to feast on the seeds and then cut the flowered stems down to their base. You will find new shoots with buds already growing up to give more flowers. Red-tailed bumblebees (here is a male with his stripy yellow jumper on)
really enjoyed Centaurea nigra in our garden this summer (2010) and they
voted it best place to dine out and we really enjoyed the buzz!
