Centaurea montana
Common name: Mountain Bluet
Lovely
mauve-centred blue cornflowers. The flowers are very attractive to bees.
The fresh leaves are attractively covered in silver hairs. Reaches about 1ft -
1ft 6in / 30-45cm
and spreads by underground shoots. Flowers from May through the summer if cut
back hard after flowers fade. Drought tolerant but not fussy about soil type.
Said to do better in limey soils but performs pretty well in our slightly acid
soil. Best in
sun or light shade.
In the wild it comes from an area from
Carpathian mountains to the Pyrenees, Central Italy and Serbia.
We purchased C. montana "Lilac
Flowered" in 2011 and found it to be identical to this plant.
