Centaurea
macrocephala
Dramatic plants with large yellow balls of
flower opening from bronze buds. The flowers are very attractive to bees. The
seed heads are equally attractive looking like bronze heads topped with brunette
wigs! The seeds provide winter food for birds and small mammals. Reaches about
2ft 6 - 3ft but the stiff stems don't require staking.
Look out for tiny caterpillars that get
into the leaves surrounding the buds as they form. They don't harm the
buds but they can tatter the leaves.
Native to Armenia and Caucasus.
Common name: Giant Knapweed.
